London, things you cannot miss when visiting London

7 things you cannot miss in London

August 4, 2022

Looking for your next city trip? Do you like exploring by foot and public transport? And do you want to end your day with an impressive performance on West End? Then London is the perfect pick. Keep on reading for the 7 things you cannot miss in London.

…

1. Explore the colourful area of Notting Hill

During my first visits to London (years ago) I never made it to the colourful neighbourhood of Notting Hill. Since I became more interested in photography over the years, I figured this was the perfect area to visit and take some cute shots. And it really was. The many colourful houses are a real treat for the eye, it’s like walking on a film set.

The photo options are endless and it was surprisingly calm when I visited (Sunday afternoon). Do note that these are people properties. We admired the houses from a distance, took quickly a few shots and continued our walk.

You can easily reach this area via the Underground – the closest station is Notting Hill Gate on the Central line. The colourful streets are on walking distance from this station. Here is a list of streets I advise to visit, screenshot them for later:

  • Farmer Street
  • Calcott Street
  • Uxbridge Street

2. Go see a musical

One of the main reasons I love to visit London is because of its wide variety of different musicals. If you like music, dance and performance too, London’s West End is a dream!

Popular shows with good seating will run you at least £100 pp, but the cost is totally worth the experience in my opinion.

Musicals I’ve seen and would absolutely recommend:

  • Wicked
  • The Lion King
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (production closed on West End)

3. Have brunch at one of the many cute cafes

There are many brunch options to be found in London and the amount of trendy & Instagram worthy spots are limitless. If you’re a foodie (and your budget isn’t too tight), you’ll be at the right spot.

Here are a few options that I taste tasted myself and that were recommended to me by friends and locals.

Taste tasted myself:

  • Farm Girl
  • The Ivy

Recommended by others:

  • NAC Mayfair
  • Borough Market

4. Wander around Covent Garden Market

If you like to stroll around some (unique) shops, enjoy lunch/dinner or a drink at a trendy café while in a cool and stylish area, Covent Garden Market is a great place to do that. This market is located in the Covent Garden district and is open every day of the week.

Tip: try out the pancakes at Crème de la Crêpe.

5. Admire the Tower Bridge from different viewpoints

One of the many iconic buildings in London is the Tower Bridge. This spectacular structure was built between 1886 and 1894 and crosses the Thames. You can cross this bridge by car/bus or by foot. I’d definitely recommend the latter as it will allow you to admire the stunning architecture from up close.

This picture was shot on the Tower Bridge itself. Head over to the middle part of the bridge for this particular photo spot.

The Tower Bridge must be admired from up close and far away. This photo spot is located at The Queens’s Walk.

6. Check out Big Ben

After 5 years of constructions, the Big Ben can finally be admired again without being covered due to constructions. You just can’t miss out on this spot as it’s one of London’s most iconic buildings and just a real treat for the eye. This is the most beautiful spot in my opinion.

The Big Ben can be spotted from many different places, such as the exit from the Underground station Westminster, Westminster Bridge or Parliament Square.

7. Enjoy a peaceful walk around Victoria Embankment Gardens

This spot is a bit of a hidden gem when it comes to the online recommended spots in London, but I’m here to tell you that Victoria Embankment Gardens is definitely worth your time. These gardens allow for a peaceful walk or even a picnic surrounded by greenery. You can also catch a glimpse of the London Eye at some spots in the park.
